Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), constituting a 6% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +61.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+103.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+40.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +103.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+47 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest paper label supplier in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +43.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+181.4% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+32.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+38.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, the amount of labels of paper or paperboard imported in Central Asia declined to X tons, shrinking by -14.2% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 68%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper label imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -22.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 53%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the major importer of labels of paper or paperboard, mixing up 55% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mongolia (8.9%). Turkmenistan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+33.9%) and Tajikistan (+22.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +33.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-1.9%), Mongolia (-7.5%) and Uzbekistan (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan increased by +23, +3.5, +2.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported labels of paper or paperboard in Central Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 10% share.

In Kazakhstan, paper label imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (-7.1% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+16.3% per year).
