In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Central Asian laptop and tablet computer market, when its value decreased by -5.2% to $X. In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 233% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X units), constituting a 35% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +60.6%).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest laptop and tablet computer supplier in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, laptop and tablet computer exports plunged by an average annual rate of -29.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -21.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 82%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while Kyrgyzstan stood at $X per unit.

Laptop and tablet computer imports dropped sharply to X units in 2021, reducing by -17.6% against the year before. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 116% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. In 2021, Kazakhstan (X units) represented the key importer of laptops and palm-top computers, generating 73% of total imports. Turkmenistan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mongolia (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units). All these countries together took near 23% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laptop and tablet computer imports into Kazakhstan stood at -11.6%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+32.5%), Mongolia (+12.9%) and Turkmenistan (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +32.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkmenistan (+7.4 p.p.), Mongolia (+6.9 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+5.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -19.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported laptops and palm-top computers in Central Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7.7% share.

In Kazakhstan, laptop and tablet computer imports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+11.0% per year) and Uzbekistan (+39.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Turkmenistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
