Luggage Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian luggage market increased by 4.3% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, luggage production reduced slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of luggage and handbags were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 292%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kyrgyzstan (X tons) was the key exporter of luggage and handbags, mixing up 56% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Kazakhstan (18%). Turkmenistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to luggage exports from Kyrgyzstan stood at +25.3%. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+49.8%) and Uzbekistan (+34.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +49.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan increased by +42, +19 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +54.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -19.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 60%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+15.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of luggage and handbags increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 208% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, luggage imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 354%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2021. Tajikistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.9% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (9.3%). Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+31.2%) and Turkmenistan (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +31.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-6.3%) and Tajikistan (-10.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +28 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported luggage and handbags in Central Asia, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at +7.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tajikistan (-9.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+6.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage import price increased by +78.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
