Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of machinery for public works and building decreased by -65.7% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 338% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 140%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X units) represented the main exporter of machinery for public works and building, making up 75% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Mongolia (X units). All these countries together took near 22% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for public works and building exports, with a CAGR of -2.8% from 2012 to 2021. Mongolia (-3.1%), Uzbekistan (-11.1%) and Tajikistan (-19.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+14 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+5 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest public works machinery supplier in Central Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 32% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 0.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+3.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (-41.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 120% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a notable increase. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per unit), while Tajikistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, public works machinery imports in Central Asia soared to X units, growing by 27% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +11.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, public works machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X units), committing a 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkmenistan (X units) and Tajikistan (X units) - together made up 4.1% of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+23.0%) and Tajikistan (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +30 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest public works machinery importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +27.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
