Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of machines for preparing, weaving and knitting textiles were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 681%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, textile weaving and knitting machinery exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 236% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kyrgyzstan (X units) represented the major exporter of machines for preparing, weaving and knitting textiles, achieving 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units), together generating a 35% share of total exports.

Exports from Kyrgyzstan increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+48.1%) and Kazakhstan (+35.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+18 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-32 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +57.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -34.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 579% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+11.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of machines for preparing, weaving and knitting textiles increased by 37% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 222%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, textile weaving and knitting machinery imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded significant growth. Uzbekistan prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 78% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X units) and Tajikistan (X units), together mixing up a 14% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X units) and Kyrgyzstan (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+37.8%), Tajikistan (+33.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+3.1%) and Kazakhstan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+78 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-21.2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-31.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machines for preparing, weaving and knitting textiles in Central Asia, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 3.1% share.

In Uzbekistan, textile weaving and knitting machinery imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkmenistan (+29.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+28.5% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -22.9% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, textile weaving and knitting machinery import price decreased by -23.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 103%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
