Magnesium Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian magnesium market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 27% against the previous year. In general, consumption posted a tangible increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the magnesium exports, with a CAGR of -13.3% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest magnesium supplier in Central Asia.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of magnesium increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 64%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest importer of magnesium in Central Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), generating a 26% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to magnesium imports into Kazakhstan stood at +15.2%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+39.4%) and Tajikistan (+20.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported magnesium in Central Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.
