Malt Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian malt market increased by 26% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of malt (not roasted) decreased by -14% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 710%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 453%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the malt (not roasted) exports, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest malt supplier in Central Asia.

In 2021, overseas purchases of malt (not roasted) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, malt imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest importers of malt (not roasted) in Central Asia, together resulting at approx. 66% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mongolia (7.9%), Tajikistan (5.9%) and Turkmenistan (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 80% of total imports.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +6.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mongolia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Tajikistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
