Manuka Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian manuka market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +14.4% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manuka production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of manuka decreased by -35.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 528%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, manuka exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 694% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 69% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to manuka exports from Kyrgyzstan stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+17.4%) and Uzbekistan (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +17 and +11 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the largest manuka supplier in Central Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Kyrgyzstan, manuka exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+22.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+13.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Manuka Imports

Imports in Central Asia

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of manuka decreased by -25.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 65%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, manuka imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of manuka imports in 2022 were Kazakhstan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together resulting at 97% of total import. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +246.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest manuka importing markets in Central Asia were Mongolia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), with a combined 98% share of total imports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +262.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
