Market Size for Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Central Asia
After eight years of growth, the Central Asian market for meat of camels and other animals decreased by -14.9% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Production of Meat of Camels and Other Animals in Central Asia
In value terms, camel and other animal meat production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Mongolia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together comprising 83% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Turkmenistan (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average camel and other animal meat yield reduced sharply to X kg per head in 2022, which is down by -15.2% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 44%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The global number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production dropped modestly to X heads in 2022, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 59%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals increased by 74% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 927%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 746% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of meat of camels and other animals, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals exports, with a CAGR of +24.1% from 2013 to 2022. While the share of Kazakhstan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in Central Asia.
From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +25.6%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest expansion from 2013 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, camel and other animal meat export price increased by +87.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.
From 2013 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +1.2% per year.
Imports of Meat of Camels and Other Animals
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of meat of camels and other animals increased by 238% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 2,195%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 1,439%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 98% of total imports in 2022. Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals imports, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012 to 2022. Mongolia (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Mongolia increased by +18 and +1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in Central Asia, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 4% share of total imports.
In Kazakhstan, camel and other animal meat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+6.2%).
