Melon Market Size in Central Asia
In 2022, the Central Asian melon market increased by 0.4% to $X, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Melon Production in Central Asia
In value terms, melon production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Kazakhstan (X tons) remains the largest melon producing country in Central Asia, comprising approx. 95% of total volume. Moreover, melon production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Kazakhstan stood at +4.4%.
In 2022, the average yield of melons in Central Asia shrank slightly to X tons per ha, falling by -3% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 7.5%. Over the period under review, the melon yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of melons were harvested in Central Asia; shrinking by -4.5% on 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to melon production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Melon Exports
Exports in Central Asia
After seven years of growth, overseas shipments of melons decreased by -57.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 290%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, melon exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 312% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan represented the key exporter of melons in Central Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating a 19% share of total exports.
Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the melons exports, with a CAGR of +39.9% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Uzbekistan (+80 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -76.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest melon supplier in Central Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan amounted to +42.6%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.0%).
Melon Imports
Imports in Central Asia
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of melons decreased by -48.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 425% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, melon imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 230%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 30% share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +55.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+64.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +64.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan increased by +12 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022.
Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +71.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+4.4%).
