The Central Asian mineral or aerated water market dropped to $X in 2022, waning by -3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Mineral or Aerated Waters in Central Asia
In value terms, mineral or aerated water production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Exports of Mineral or Aerated Waters
Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of mineral or aerated waters decreased by -13.3% to X litres, falling for the fourth consecutive year after seven years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 180%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Kyrgyzstan (X litres) and Kazakhstan (X litres) prevails in exports structure, together creating 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X litres), achieving a 7.8% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X litres) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +31.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest mineral or aerated water supplying countries in Central Asia were Kyrgyzstan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), together comprising 95% of total exports.
Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +19.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per litre in 2022, with a decrease of -40.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per litre), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+29.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Mineral or Aerated Waters
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, the amount of mineral or aerated waters imported in Central Asia dropped to X litres, which is down by -3.2% on the year before. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +99.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X litres in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
In value terms, mineral or aerated water imports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the largest importing country with an import of about X litres, which recorded 70% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X litres) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkmenistan (5.1%). The following importers - Mongolia (X litres) and Kyrgyzstan (X litres) - each amounted to a 7.7% share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+52.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mongolia (-1.4%) and Turkmenistan (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-3.9 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mineral or aerated waters in Central Asia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan totaled +3.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+36.6% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+8.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 6.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
