Molluscs Market Size in Central Asia
In 2021, the Central Asian molluscs market decreased by -4.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia
For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), which increased by 23% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 169% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, molluscs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 433% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X tons), together resulting at 100% of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports, with a CAGR of -34.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest molluscs supplier in Central Asia.
In Kazakhstan, molluscs exports plunged by an average annual rate of -36.0% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 98%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to -2.1% per year.
Molluscs Imports
Imports in Central Asia
For the fourth year in a row, Central Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), which increased by 46% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +131.7% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country
Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus). At the same time, Uzbekistan (+32.1%), Turkmenistan (+15.2%) and Mongolia (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+3.8 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-3 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-3.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) in Central Asia, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at -1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+70.7% per year) and Turkmenistan (+15.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+29.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
