Exports in Central Asia
For the fourth consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts, which increased by 26% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 374%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nail and bolt exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 199%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), committing a 26% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts exports, with a CAGR of +74.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+70 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-5.6 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-63.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest nail and bolt supplier in Central Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan totaled +63.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+21.7% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-17.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 137% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts decreased by -6.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, nail and bolt imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -3.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main importer of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts, comprising 59% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (9%), Mongolia (6.3%) and Turkmenistan (4.7%). Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+15.0%) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +15.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-7.2%), Turkmenistan (-11.5%) and Tajikistan (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tajikistan (-5 p.p.), Mongolia (-5.8 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts in Central Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+29.5% per year) and Mongolia (+0.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
