Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 350% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 179%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 6.7% share of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures exports, with a CAGR of +59.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-29.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan increased by +77 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures increased by 3.9% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 626% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 393%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 65% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (12%). Mongolia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +34.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+44.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+12.9%) and Mongolia (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +44.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+65 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-16.2 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-58.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported naphthalene and other aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures in Central Asia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan totaled +37.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+39.7% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+12.4% per year).
