Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, nitrates exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 395% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X tons), together finishing at 99% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nitrates (excluding those of potassium) exports, with a CAGR of +83.9% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+44 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest nitrates supplier in Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, nitrates exports expanded at an average annual rate of +94.1% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -72.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 303%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +5.5% per year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) decreased by -21.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 219%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, nitrates imports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the major importer of nitrates (excluding those of potassium) in Central Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (10%).

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +24.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+42.9%) and Uzbekistan (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +15, +13 and +10 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Turkmenistan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Turkmenistan, with a CAGR of +42.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
