Nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports shrank dramatically to X kg in 2022, declining by -99.2% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 10,922% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5,578%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Uzbekistan (X kg) was the key exporter of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, mixing up 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X kg), generating a 33% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports, with a CAGR of +29.9% from 2013 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+27.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2013 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +67 percentage points.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% over the period from 2013-2022.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 73% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan stood at $X per ton.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-8.1%).

Imports in Central Asia

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -14.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 95%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 91%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together achieving 84% of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.1% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.4%). Mongolia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +36.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nutmeg, mace and cardamoms in Central Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 16% share.

In Kazakhstan, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+64.8% per year) and Turkmenistan (+10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 41%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
