In 2022, the amount of office or school supplies of plastics exported in Central Asia soared to X tons, rising by 194% against the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 960%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan was the largest exporter of office or school supplies of plastics in Central Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), generating a 22% share of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +31.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+102.1%), Uzbekistan (+29.4%) and Kyrgyzstan (+27.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +102.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kazakhstan (+10 p.p.), Turkmenistan (+4 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-3.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest office supply supplier in Central Asia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +28.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+27.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+83.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -15.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 97%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+41.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of office or school supplies of plastics was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 72%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, office supply imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 50% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -4.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+9.1%) and Turkmenistan (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012-2022. Tajikistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-7.1%) and Mongolia (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan increased by +22, +7.1 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported office or school supplies of plastics in Central Asia, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan stood at -3.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-0.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+10.8% per year).

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -13.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
