Onion And Shallot Market Size in Central Asia
The Central Asian onion and shallot market reduced to $X in 2022, falling by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. After two years of decline, shipments abroad of onions and shallots increased by 40% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan represented the main exporter of onions and shallots in Central Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 49% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons). All these countries together held near 50% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +48.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in Central Asia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
In Uzbekistan, onion and shallot exports increased at an average annual rate of +46.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+9.1% per year) and Tajikistan (-6.3% per year).

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, onion and shallot imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +20.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 94%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. Mongolia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot imports into Kazakhstan stood at +12.8%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+160.4%), Kyrgyzstan (+51.4%) and Mongolia (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +160.4% from 2012-2022. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +14, +7.7 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported onions and shallots in Central Asia, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +8.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+12.8% per year) and Turkmenistan (+3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
