In 2022, shipments abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations increased by 45% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 419% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 431% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, purchases abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations increased by 9.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports recorded a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together comprising a 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkmenistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.5% share of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations. At the same time, Mongolia (+9.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+6.2%) and Turkmenistan (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tajikistan (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+23 p.p.) and Mongolia (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Tajikistan (-1.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-29.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in Central Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mongolia (+9.5% per year) and Uzbekistan (+1.5% per year).
