Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of oriented strandboard (OSB) decreased by -43.5% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,338%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X cubic meters, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 545% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters), creating an 8.5% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oriented strandboard (OSB) exports, with a CAGR of +59.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+40.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kyrgyzstan (+8.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -8.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest oriented strandboard (OSB) supplier in Central Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, oriented strandboard (OSB) exports expanded at an average annual rate of +54.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Imports in Central Asia

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of oriented strandboard (OSB) decreased by -1.7% to X cubic meters in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the largest importer of oriented strandboard (OSB) in Central Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 56% of total imports in 2021. Mongolia (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters). All these countries together held approx. 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Uzbekistan (X cubic meters) and Tajikistan (X cubic meters) - together made up 6.7% of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of oriented strandboard (OSB). At the same time, Uzbekistan (+24.4%), Tajikistan (+18.3%), Kyrgyzstan (+9.4%) and Mongolia (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +24.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan increased by +7.5, +4.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported oriented strandboard (OSB) in Central Asia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled -2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+3.9% per year) and Mongolia (+11.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 26%. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per cubic meter), while Mongolia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
