In value terms, paper and paperboard exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major exporter of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Central Asia, creating 99% of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +10 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, the amount of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) imported in Central Asia shrank slightly to X tons, waning by -2.3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 172%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the key importer of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Central Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), constituting a 22% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper and paperboard imports into Kazakhstan stood at +9.4%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+9.7%) and Uzbekistan (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +9.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-13.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in Central Asia, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.
In Kazakhstan, paper and paperboard imports increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+14.6% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+6.3% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 35% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep slump. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
