Peach And Nectarine Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian peach and nectarine market soared to $X in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Uzbekistan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of peach and nectarine production, comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, peach and nectarine production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tajikistan (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkmenistan (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Uzbekistan totaled +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (+1.4% per year) and Turkmenistan (+0.6% per year).

In 2021, the average peach and nectarine yield in Central Asia totaled X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 4.1%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The peach and nectarine harvested area was estimated at X ha in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 9.5%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of peaches and nectarines, when their volume decreased by -55.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 3,849% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, peach and nectarine exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 2,824%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 7.9% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Uzbekistan decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+60.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +60.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+90 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-91.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest peach and nectarine supplier in Central Asia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports.

In Uzbekistan, peach and nectarine exports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kyrgyzstan (-8.6% per year) and Tajikistan (+43.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, peach and nectarine export price increased by +108.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+22.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, peach and nectarine imports in Central Asia fell significantly to X tons, shrinking by -70.4% against the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 68%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, peach and nectarine imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key importer of peaches and nectarines, constituting 64% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), generating a 32% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -10.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+77.2%) and Mongolia (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +77.2% from 2012-2021. Kyrgyzstan (+32 p.p.) and Mongolia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -34% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported peaches and nectarines in Central Asia, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

In Kazakhstan, peach and nectarine imports contracted by an average annual rate of -13.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+74.2% per year) and Mongolia (+10.0% per year).
