Exports in Central Asia

After five years of growth, shipments abroad of perfumes and toilet waters decreased by -21% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 138%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, perfume exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 271%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), making up an 8.8% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+20.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+8.8 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest perfume supplier in Central Asia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 1.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +17.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+39.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (+1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 36% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 99%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+15.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of perfumes and toilet waters were imported in Central Asia; growing by 5.4% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, perfume imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +112.1% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 38%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together comprising a 46% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of perfumes and toilet waters. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+33.8%), Tajikistan (+9.5%), Kyrgyzstan (+7.5%) and Turkmenistan (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mongolia (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan increased by +18, +4.4, +2.2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported perfumes and toilet waters in Central Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with an 8.7% share.

In Kazakhstan, perfume imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+36.4% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+8.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
