Pistachio Market Size in Central Asia
For the third consecutive year, the Central Asian pistachio market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -46.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Pistachio Production in Central Asia
In value terms, pistachio production reduced remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 130%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tajikistan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), with a combined 99% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +1.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.
The average pistachio yield shrank markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -37.3% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 48%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then dropped significantly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The pistachio harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of -8.1% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area saw a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Pistachio Exports
Exports in Central Asia
In 2022, the amount of pistachios exported in Central Asia plummeted to X tons, with a decrease of -41.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 398% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, pistachio exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 351%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 88% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating an 8.1% share of total exports. The following exporters - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - each reached a 3.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest pistachio supplying countries in Central Asia were Tajikistan ($X), Kyrgyzstan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X), with a combined 86% share of total exports.
Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +30.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +13.1% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pistachio Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2022, imports of pistachios in Central Asia reduced sharply to X tons, falling by -37.8% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 197%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pistachio imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 85%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 66% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Tajikistan (9.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (7.4%).
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+58.4%) and Tajikistan (+31.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +58.4% from 2012-2022. Kyrgyzstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Uzbekistan (+17 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+8.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-7.5 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-17.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 9.9% share.
In Kazakhstan, pistachio imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+0.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+45.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -18.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 32%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
