The Central Asian plastic container market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 33% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Plastic Container Production in Central Asia

In value terms, plastic container production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 21%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of plastic containers decreased by -30.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,516%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, plastic container exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 826% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up a 5.3% share of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic containers exports, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kyrgyzstan (+4.5 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -7.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) remains the largest plastic container supplier in Central Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kyrgyzstan amounted to +12.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+7.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+3.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+36.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of plastic containers were imported in Central Asia; jumping by 17% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 89% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic container imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main importer of plastic containers in Central Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mongolia (6%). Tajikistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic container imports into Kazakhstan stood at +17.2%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+35.2%), Tajikistan (+19.5%) and Mongolia (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +35.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-21.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kyrgyzstan (+11 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mongolia and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -6.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic containers in Central Asia, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 6.2% share.

In Kazakhstan, plastic container imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-3.3% per year) and Mongolia (+4.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 35% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
