In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of plastic sacks and bags, when their volume decreased by -20.8% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 404%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

Turkmenistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the largest exporters of plastic sacks and bags in 2022, accounting for near 45% and 35% of total exports, respectively. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (7.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic bag supplying countries in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X), Turkmenistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a combined 92% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +52.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of plastic sacks and bags imported in Central Asia surged to X tons, growing by 29% on 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic bag imports soared to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +58.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Kazakhstan represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), creating a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Tajikistan (X tons), Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each finished at a 5.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic bag imports into Kazakhstan stood at +4.2%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+13.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. Mongolia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tajikistan (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +6.5 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic sacks and bags in Central Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 28% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+9.2% per year) and Mongolia (+12.6% per year).
