Explosives Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian explosives market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +109.5% against 2015 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, explosives exports in Central Asia surged to X tons, jumping by 36% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 298%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, explosives exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 139%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Tajikistan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.3% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared explosives exports, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012 to 2021. Tajikistan (-8.7%) and Uzbekistan (-28.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+38 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tajikistan saw its share reduced by -41.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest explosives supplier in Central Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 7% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, explosives exports expanded at an average annual rate of +30.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+44.4% per year) and Tajikistan (-6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 143%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+102.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

Explosives imports reduced to X tons in 2021, which is down by -7% on 2020. Overall, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, explosives imports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tajikistan (5%). Mongolia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to explosives imports into Kazakhstan stood at -6.5%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+6.3%) and Tajikistan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mongolia (-32.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan increased by +14, +7.4 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared explosives in Central Asia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tajikistan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 9.7% share.

In Kazakhstan, explosives imports contracted by an average annual rate of -11.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (+8.5% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-3.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tajikistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
