In 2021, the Central Asian prepared mustard market decreased by -53.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption saw prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of prepared mustard decreased by -1.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 106%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, prepared mustard exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 88%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main exporter of prepared mustard in Central Asia, mixing up 100% of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the prepared mustard exports, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of prepared mustard were imported in Central Asia; rising by 21% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +136.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 97%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, prepared mustard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +138.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 69% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mongolia (7.8%), Kyrgyzstan (6.8%) and Tajikistan (5%). Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mongolia (+24.3%), Uzbekistan (+17.7%), Tajikistan (+12.9%), Kyrgyzstan (+6.5%) and Turkmenistan (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Uzbekistan (+8 p.p.) and Mongolia (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-2.1 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (-2.4 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared mustard in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mongolia ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan totaled +4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+23.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+25.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 3% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mongolia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) and Tajikistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
