Canned Food Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian canned food market increased by 5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -4.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. In 2021, overseas shipments of canned food decreased by -28.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 89%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, canned food exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -23.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mongolia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main exporter of canned food in Central Asia, achieving 89% of total export. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 6.7% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mongolia (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) remains the largest canned food supplier in Central Asia, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 21% share.

In Mongolia, canned food exports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-9.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+36.7% per year).

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+25.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of canned food increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +104.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 24%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, canned food imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +98.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key importer of canned food in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mongolia (12%), Kyrgyzstan (7.8%) and Tajikistan (5.7%). Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+21.8%), Mongolia (+10.6%), Tajikistan (+7.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +21.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Mongolia increased by +12 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported canned food in Central Asia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 12% share.
