After two years of decline, the Central Asian primary cell and battery market increased by 15% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +66.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+201.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +201.5% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan (+73 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+7.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Central Asia, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 0.2% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, primary cell and battery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +43.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 192% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan stood at less than $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-13.7%).

In 2022, the amount of primary cells and batteries imported in Central Asia surged to X units, picking up by 32% against the year before. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 172% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, primary cell and battery imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 54%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the major importer of primary cells and batteries in Central Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X units, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X units), Turkmenistan (X units), Mongolia (X units) and Kyrgyzstan (X units), together constituting a 36% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (+30.1%), Turkmenistan (+26.8%), Kyrgyzstan (+24.2%), Uzbekistan (+23.9%) and Mongolia (+9.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan increased by +18, +5.7, +4.1 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X), together comprising 93% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +77.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -22.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 338%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Turkmenistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
