In 2021, approx. X tons of pyrethrum and peppermint were exported in Central Asia; shrinking by -21.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 94%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 143%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the key exporter of pyrethrum and peppermint, generating 75% of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (8.3%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pyrethrum and peppermint exports from Uzbekistan stood at -8.7%. Turkmenistan (-5.0%), Kyrgyzstan (-8.2%) and Kazakhstan (-28.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan increased by +75 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest pyrethrum and peppermint supplier in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with an 8.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan totaled +6.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-25.3% per year) and Turkmenistan (-18.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pyrethrum And Peppermint Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, the amount of pyrethrum and peppermint imported in Central Asia stood at X tons, approximately mirroring 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, pyrethrum and peppermint imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together achieving a 21% share of total imports. The following importers - Mongolia (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total imports.
Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of pyrethrum and peppermint. At the same time, Tajikistan (+35.7%) and Mongolia (+35.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-1.6%) and Uzbekistan (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+15 p.p.), Mongolia (+3.1 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -1.9% and -18.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, the largest pyrethrum and peppermint importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X), together accounting for 93% of total imports. These countries were followed by Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 6.1%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +39.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
