The Central Asian rice bran market surged to $X in 2021, increasing by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, overseas purchases of rice bran decreased by -27.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 506%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, rice bran imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 188%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kyrgyzstan prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons), together creating a 23% share of total imports.

Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rice bran imports, with a CAGR of +349.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+45.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Mongolia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +75, +8.6 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rice bran in Central Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kyrgyzstan totaled +264.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+17.1% per year) and Mongolia (-4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mongolia (-5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
