Paddy Rice Market Size in Central Asia

After two years of decline, the Central Asian paddy rice market increased by 0.5% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a noticeable decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Paddy Rice Production in Central Asia

In value terms, paddy rice production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 16%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of paddy rice in Central Asia totaled X tons per ha, approximately equating the year before. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 7.5%. Over the period under review, the paddy rice yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of paddy rice were harvested in Central Asia; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to paddy rice production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, the amount of paddy rice exported in Central Asia soared to X tons, rising by 56% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 599%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 627%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paddy rice exports, with a CAGR of +93.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+44.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan increased by +86 and +4.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest paddy rice supplier in Central Asia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -26.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (-8.0%).

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of paddy rice were imported in Central Asia; increasing by 76% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 597% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paddy rice imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 509%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 80% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (6.5%). Tajikistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +14.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+33.8%), Kazakhstan (+22.5%) and Tajikistan (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan (+80 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -5.3%, -23.6% and -37.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest paddy rice importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +38.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -50.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 123%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
