Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of rum decreased by -9.1% to X litres for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 71%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Kazakhstan (X litres) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rum exports, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan increased by +99 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest rum supplier in Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, rum exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per litre in 2022, surging by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 515% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, rum imports in Central Asia expanded sharply to X litres, surging by 9% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, rum imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +71.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, finishing at X litres, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X litres), making up a 7.6% share of total imports. The following importers - Mongolia (X litres) and Uzbekistan (X litres) - each reached an 8.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rum imports into Kazakhstan stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+44.5%), Mongolia (+4.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +44.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +4.2 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rum in Central Asia, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 6.2% share.

In Kazakhstan, rum imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+1.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+48.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per litre, falling by -18% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 65% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per litre), while Kazakhstan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
