Sheep Leather Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian sheep leather market rose significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 7.1% against the previous year. Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of sheep or lamb skin leather were finally on the rise to reach X square meters after two years of decline. In general, exports showed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 1,140% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sheep leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 876%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan was the key exporting country with an export of about X square meters, which amounted to 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X square meters) and Tajikistan (X square meters), together constituting a 16% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X square meters) and Turkmenistan (X square meters) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheep leather exports from Uzbekistan stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+20.5%) and Turkmenistan (+14.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +20.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-8.3%) and Kyrgyzstan (-18.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan increased by +78, +3.5 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest sheep leather supplier in Central Asia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 10% share.

In Uzbekistan, sheep leather exports contracted by an average annual rate of -21.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-17.6% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-16.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -29.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 162%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per square meter), while Uzbekistan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X square meters of sheep or lamb skin leather were imported in Central Asia; increasing by 2,265% against 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheep leather imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a resilient increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mongolia represented the key importer of sheep or lamb skin leather in Central Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X square meters, which was near 81% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X square meters), comprising a 16% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Mongolia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skin leather imports, with a CAGR of +181.5% from 2012 to 2021. Kazakhstan (-5.0%) and Kyrgyzstan (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mongolia (+81 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-82.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skin leather in Central Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mongolia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kyrgyzstan stood at +4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mongolia (+63.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (-15.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per square meter, with a decrease of -44% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 369%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per square meter), while Mongolia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+40.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
