Sheepskin And Lambskin Market Size in Central Asia

After four years of growth, the Central Asian sheepskin and lambskin market decreased by -13% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. Mongolia (X tons) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin producing country in Central Asia, accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin production in Mongolia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 16% share.

In Mongolia, sheepskin and lambskin production expanded at an average annual rate of +9.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+1.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (+1.3% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Central Asia contracted modestly to X kg per head, waning by -4.6% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the sheepskin and lambskin yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in Central Asia contracted to X heads, which is down by -7.8% against the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the number of producing animals increased by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number reached the maximum level at X heads in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), when their volume increased by 62% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 77%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkmenistan was the major exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Central Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), creating a 14% share of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Turkmenistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. Kazakhstan (-33.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-39.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkmenistan (+77 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-5.8 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (-72.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkmenistan ($X) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in Central Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports.

In Turkmenistan, sheepskin and lambskin exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (-35.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (-20.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -33.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 91%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+19.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, imports of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in Central Asia soared to X tons, surging by 52% on the year before. In general, imports, however, showed a significant decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 985% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 364% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the key importer of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), creating 58% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkmenistan (15%).

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sheep or lamb skins (without wool) imports, with a CAGR of +53.3% from 2012 to 2021. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Kazakhstan (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
