Silicone Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian silicone market decreased by -1.7% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Silicone Production in Central Asia

In value terms, silicone production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +119.8% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 40%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of silicones (in primary forms) increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 366% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, silicone exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 329%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 53% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together generating a 44% share of total exports. Mongolia (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to silicone exports from Kazakhstan stood at +13.0%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+171.9%), Turkmenistan (+31.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+24.3%) and Mongolia (+19.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +171.9% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan (+16 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+7.5 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -29.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest silicone supplier in Central Asia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkmenistan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 13% share.

In Kazakhstan, silicone exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkmenistan (+65.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (+119.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 104%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+26.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of silicones (in primary forms) were imported in Central Asia; surging by 8.9% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, silicone imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 133%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons), together constituting a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest silicone importing markets in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X), together comprising 92% of total imports. These countries were followed by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, which together accounted for a further 6.8%.

Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +38.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 9% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Tajikistan ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
