In 2021, the Central Asian skim milk market decreased by -1.1% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Uzbekistan (X tons) remains the largest skim milk producing country in Central Asia, comprising approx. 66% of total volume. Moreover, skim milk production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold. Mongolia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.7% share.

In Uzbekistan, skim milk production increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+5.9% per year) and Mongolia (-1.6% per year).

Skim Milk Exports

Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of skim milk decreased by -10.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 528%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, skim milk exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 355%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), comprising a 21% share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +36.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+90.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +90.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan increased by +20 percentage points.

In value terms, the largest skim milk supplying countries in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X).

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of skim milk, when their volume increased by 139% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 326%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 253%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Kazakhstan prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 97% of total imports in 2021. Tajikistan (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
