Exports by Country
Kazakhstan was the key exporter of smoked fish other than salmon and herring in Central Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 65% of total exports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (17%).
Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -19.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+152.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +152.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+17 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-29.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest smoked fish other than salmon and herring supplying countries in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Kyrgyzstan ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +117.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 70%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+21.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of smoked fish other than salmon and herring decreased by -6.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 199% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, imports of smoked fish other than salmon and herring surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 133%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 78% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to smoked fish other than salmon and herring imports into Kazakhstan stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+111.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+53.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +111.8% from 2012-2021. Turkmenistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Uzbekistan (+13 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -15.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked fish other than salmon and herring in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+120.8% per year) and Turkmenistan (+6.3% per year).
