After two years of growth, the Central Asian smoked salmon market decreased by -11% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption saw a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon exports, with a CAGR of -12.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest smoked salmon supplier in Central Asia.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon decreased by -9.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 141%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, smoked salmon imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 82% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 15% share of total imports. Mongolia (X kg) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +74.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 95% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +86.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
