For the fifth consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of caustic soda in the solid form, which increased by 0.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 95%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of caustic soda in the solid form totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 102% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the main exporter of caustic soda in the solid form, generating 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), mixing up a 33% share of total exports. Mongolia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mongolia (with a CAGR of +169.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of caustic soda in the solid form decreased by -2.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 48%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together mixing up a 43% share of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda in the solid form importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a combined 89% share of total imports. Turkmenistan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 8.1%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +5.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 38%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
