Exports in Central Asia

In 2021, exports of spades and shovels in Central Asia surged to X tons, picking up by 39% against the year before. In general, exports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 3,482%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spades and shovels exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. Imports in Central Asia

Spades and shovels imports declined notably to X tons in 2021, which is down by -37.2% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, posted a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 225%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spades and shovels imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 141%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the main importer of spades and shovels in Central Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together generating a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Mongolia (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Turkmenistan (X tons) - together made up 7.8% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +12.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spades and shovels in Central Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+2.8% per year) and Uzbekistan (+22.2% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
