Sugar Beet Market Size in Central Asia

After three years of decline, the Central Asian sugar beet market increased by 14% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption showed buoyant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Sugar Beet Production in Central Asia

In value terms, sugar beet production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 357%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Central Asia

Sugar beet exports totaled X tons in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. In general, exports saw a dramatic descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 95,775% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4,176% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 a decrease of less than 0.1%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of sugar beet decreased by -24.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 63%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of sugar beet, namely Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar beet imports, with a CAGR of -3.0% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
