In Turkmenistan, barium or aluminium sulphates exports expanded at an average annual rate of +29.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (-0.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (-19.0% per year).

In 2022, overseas purchases of sulphates of barium or aluminium were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports showed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 108%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the main importer of sulphates of barium or aluminium in Central Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons), together constituting a 42% share of total imports. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of sulphates of barium or aluminium. At the same time, Mongolia (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-2.1%) and Turkmenistan (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+24 p.p.) and Mongolia (+9.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkmenistan (-5.8 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-15.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 95% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mongolia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Turkmenistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
