Sweet Potato Market Size in Central Asia

In 2021, the Central Asian sweet potato market decreased by -36.8% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, consumption, however, saw significant growth. Kazakhstan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sweet potato production, accounting for 92% of total volume. Moreover, sweet potato production in Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

Exports by Country

In 2018, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the largest exporter of sweet potatoes, making up 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X kg), mixing up a 15% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sweet potatoes. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+75.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +75.6% from 2016-2018. Uzbekistan (+84 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2018, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per ton.

From 2016 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+4.2%).

In 2021, supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -74.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 494% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sweet potato imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 338%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), distantly followed by Mongolia (X tons) were the major importers of sweet potatoes, together achieving 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +107.1%).

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sweet potatoes in Central Asia, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mongolia stood at +21.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per ton.
