For the third year in a row, the Central Asian organic pigments market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -4.1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a slight decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Organic Pigments Production in Central Asia
In value terms, organic pigments production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Central Asia
In 2021, shipments abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments decreased by -39.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 225% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, organic pigments exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major exporter of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments, creating 64% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together took near 34% share of total exports. Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+47.8%) and Tajikistan (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkmenistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +47.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan increased by +24 and +10 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest organic pigments supplier in Central Asia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 28% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Uzbekistan totaled +46.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (-7.8% per year) and Turkmenistan (+45.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 131% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a resilient expansion. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+81.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Organic Pigments Imports
Imports in Central Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments decreased by -17.9% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 345% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, organic pigments imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 240%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Uzbekistan was the largest importer of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments in Central Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 62% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Turkmenistan (11%), Tajikistan (6.3%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.4%).
Imports into Uzbekistan decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+25.9%), Tajikistan (+25.3%), Turkmenistan (+8.7%) and Kazakhstan (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +25.9% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +62 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments in Central Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan stood at +11.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+5.2% per year) and Turkmenistan (+7.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
