Tall Oil Market Size in Central Asia

After three years of growth, the Central Asian tall oil market decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tall Oil Production in Central Asia

In value terms, tall oil production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a measured expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2018, shipments abroad of tall oil increased by 1,367% to X kg, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a sharp descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tall oil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2018. In general, exports, however, showed a precipitous decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X kg) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2018.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tall oil exports, with a CAGR of +253.0% from 2014 to 2018. Kazakhstan (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest tall oil supplier in Central Asia.

In Kazakhstan, tall oil exports expanded at an average annual rate of +177.3% over the period from 2014-2018.

Export Prices by Country

In 2018, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -39.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 646%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2018, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.

From 2014 to 2018, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to -21.5% per year.

Tall Oil Imports

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of tall oil decreased by -33.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tall oil imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the key importer of tall oil, generating 60% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Turkmenistan (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Turkmenistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

Among the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +18.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, tall oil import price increased by +68.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkmenistan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkmenistan (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
