For the third consecutive year, the Central Asian tanned or dressed furskins market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 35% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +30.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tanned or dressed furskins exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,194%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Kyrgyzstan was the key exporter of tanned or dressed furskins in Central Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X units) held a 29% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (27%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the largest tanned or dressed furskins supplier in Central Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

Imports in Central Asia

Tanned or dressed furskins imports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, picking up by 62% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 334%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tanned or dressed furskins imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 348% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X units) represented the largest importer of tanned or dressed furskins, generating 76% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X units). All these countries together took near 21% share of total imports. Mongolia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+11.6%) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mongolia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+14 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest tanned or dressed furskins importing markets in Central Asia were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Mongolia ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports.

Mongolia, with a CAGR of +5.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Central Asia amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -45.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 77% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
