Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, technical textiles exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 232%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the largest exporter of textile products and articles for technical uses, constituting 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising a 25% share of total exports. Turkmenistan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to technical textiles exports from Kazakhstan stood at +36.0%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+72.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +72.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-11.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+51 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+25 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Turkmenistan (-37 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) emerged as the largest technical textiles supplier in Central Asia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, technical textiles exports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+72.6% per year) and Turkmenistan (-7.2% per year).

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -27.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 139%. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of textile products and articles for technical uses, when their volume increased by 30% to X tons. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, technical textiles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan represented the major importer of textile products and articles for technical uses in Central Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 70% of total imports in 2021. Uzbekistan (X tons) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (4.7%). Tajikistan (X tons), Turkmenistan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to technical textiles imports into Kazakhstan stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+8.8%), Uzbekistan (+6.2%), Mongolia (+4.1%) and Tajikistan (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Turkmenistan (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +18 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported textile products and articles for technical uses in Central Asia, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 2.8% share.
