Concrete Tile Market Size in Central Asia

The Central Asian concrete tile market declined modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone increased by 38% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 277%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, concrete tile exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 264%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 78% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (7.6%). Turkmenistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone exports, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkmenistan (+22.5%), Uzbekistan (+14.0%) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Kazakhstan (+38 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -49.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest concrete tile supplier in Central Asia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +29.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+19.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+10.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Central Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 160% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone, when their volume decreased by -40% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, concrete tile imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the largest importer of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone, generating 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons), together generating a 23% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +19.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+27.2%) and Uzbekistan (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +27.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mongolia (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+53 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+13 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Mongolia (-66.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in Central Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mongolia, with a 12% share.

In Kazakhstan, concrete tile imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+22.3% per year) and Mongolia (-8.5% per year).
